Adam Caporn has been appointed as the head coach of the Australian men's national basketball team (the Boomers), succeeding Brian Goorjian, who recently departed. Caporn has been an assistant coach for the Boomers in recent years and is well-regarded within the organization.
The 42-year-old Western Australian currently serves as an assistant coach for the NBA's Washington Wizards. Prior to this, Caporn was the head coach of the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence (AIS) from 2014 to 2021, before moving to the United States to become the head coach of the Long Island Nets in the NBA G League and an assistant coach for the NBA's Brooklyn Nets.
According to ESPN, Caporn emerged from a field of five candidates, including Quin Snyder, Gordie Herbert, Will Weaver, and Brett Brielmaier, to ultimately secure the job. Atlanta Hawks head coach Snyder withdrew from consideration due to scheduling conflicts, streamlining the selection process.
Caporn has served as an assistant to former Boomers head coaches Andrej Lemanis and Goorjian in the past four major tournaments, helping Australia achieve a historic bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, a significant milestone for the program.
Caporn stated, "It is an incredible honor to be a part of the Boomers program. To be appointed as head coach is truly a dream come true. I am extremely grateful to Basketball Australia for their trust in me, and for the invaluable experience and opportunities that the entire Australian basketball community has given me, from grassroots development to the Olympic stage."
"I want to especially thank Andrej Lemanis and Brian Goorjian for inviting me to join the Boomers coaching staff – your guidance and contribution to this program has been truly inspiring." Caporn added, acknowledging the influence of his predecessors.
Melbourne United head coach Dean Vickerman has been appointed as the Boomers' new associate head coach, and he will assume head coaching duties if Caporn's NBA schedule presents any conflicts, providing a crucial layer of support and continuity.
