The Solomon Islands and Australia have officially launched the "Solomon Islands-Australia Health Partnership," a AU$150 million investment plan aimed at improving healthcare services in the Solomon Islands and saving more lives. This partnership signifies a further deepening of the long-term cooperation between the two countries in the health sector.

The launch ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Hon. Dr. Paul Bosawai MP, Minister of Health and Medical Services, Hon. Wayne Ghiro MP, Minister of Provincial Government, His Excellency Rod Hilton, Australian High Commissioner, Dr. Lucas De Toca, Australian Global Health Ambassador, and Mrs. Pauline McNeil, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health. This high-level attendance reflects the great importance both sides attach to this partnership.

High Commissioner Hilton stated, "This new AU$150 million investment will open a new phase of our health partnership, with a greater focus on healthcare services in the provinces." He added, "Half of this funding, AU$75 million, will be directly allocated to provincial health departments and the Honiara City Council to provide essential primary health services. This is in addition to our investments in the Naha Birthing and Urban Health Centre and all other important regional health programs."

The new health partnership also includes a AU$10 million health facilities fund to support small-scale upgrades to health facilities in the provinces, as well as a AU$10 million national priorities fund to address emerging health priorities identified by the government. Furthermore, in recognition of the important role of women and emerging leaders in the health sector, the partnership will establish a AU$2 million Permanent Secretary "Women in Health Leadership Award."

Minister Bosawai said, "As the previous phase of the health partnership comes to an end, today marks a new and reaffirmed commitment to the health sector. The Solomon Islands-Australia Health Partnership 2025-2028 solidifies Australia's position as our largest health development partner and preferred partner to support strengthening our health system and delivering essential health services." Ambassador De Toca also expressed his honor to be in the Solomon Islands to celebrate the launch of the new health partnership.

This new phase of support builds on the achievements of previous phases and refocuses on the delivery of provincial health services, aligning with the National Health Strategic Plan. Minister Bosawai, High Commissioner Hilton, and Ambassador De Toca all expressed their deep gratitude to the dedicated staff of the Ministry of Health and health workers across the country, acknowledging their critical role in saving lives and improving the health of all Solomon Islanders.

The health partnership marks an important step towards ensuring access to quality healthcare for all Solomon Islanders, paving the way for a healthier future for all. This cooperation is expected to significantly improve the overall health status of the Solomon Islands.
