Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Monday that he would "immediately" terminate Secret Service protection for the adult children of Democrat Joe Biden. This comes after Trump extended this protection until July, shortly before leaving office in January of this year.
The former Republican president took to social media to object to what he described as the detail of 18 agents assigned to protect Hunter Biden, reportedly in South Africa this week. Trump also stated that Ashley Biden has 13 agents assigned to her protection and that she "will be removed from the list" as well.
Under federal law, former presidents and their spouses are entitled to lifetime Secret Service protection. However, protection for immediate family members over the age of 16 terminates when they leave office. Outgoing presidents can extend protection for those who might not otherwise qualify, up to six months after leaving office; Biden did this for his children, and Trump did the same for his family after leaving office in 2021.
The Secret Service said in a statement: "We are aware of the President's decision to terminate protection for Hunter and Ashley Biden. The Secret Service will comply with this decision and is actively working with the protection teams and the White House to ensure compliance as quickly as possible."
On Monday afternoon, while visiting the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a reporter asked Trump if he would revoke protection for the former president's sons. Trump replied, "Well, we've done that for a lot of people. I will say, if Hunter Biden has 18 agents, I'm going to look at that this afternoon." He also added that this was the first time he had heard of the matter. "I'll take a look at it," he said.
