A snorkeling boat carrying 13 people capsized in the waters off Bali, resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to two others. Among the passengers were 11 Australian tourists, a fact confirmed by local police authorities.
Local police spokesperson Agus Widiono stated that the vessel, named "Sea Dragon," was en route from a port in Bali to Nusa Penida, a popular small island located near Bali. Tragically, the boat encountered a large wave during its journey, causing the unfortunate incident.
Reports indicate that the group of tourists was enjoying the underwater scenery when the accident occurred. Suddenly, a large wave swept a 39-year-old woman, identified by police as Anna Maree, into the sea. This was immediately followed by a second wave, which directly led to the boat capsizing in the Kelingking waters.
A nearby vessel quickly responded to the scene, rescuing 12 survivors from the turbulent waters, including two local crew members and the two injured tourists. Rescue personnel subsequently recovered Maree's body. The survivors have received medical treatment at a nearby clinic and are currently in stable condition.
Indonesia has experienced numerous maritime accidents in recent years, resulting in hundreds of fatalities. Overcrowded vessels and lax enforcement of safety regulations are common contributing factors. As an archipelago nation with over 17,000 islands and a population of 280 million, Indonesia relies heavily on boats as a popular and relatively inexpensive mode of transportation.
