Abstract: A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand's North Island near Eketahuna, felt widely. Reports mention pre-quake sounds and shaking; no major damage.

A strong earthquake struck the southern part of New Zealand's North Island, with over 23,000 people reporting that they felt the tremors. One man mentioned that he heard the sound of the earthquake before the initial strong shaking began, suggesting a possible pre-shock auditory phenomenon.

The earthquake registered a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located 10 kilometers east of Eketahuna, at a depth of 35 kilometers. The quake occurred at 11:26 PM (9:26 PM Australian Eastern Daylight Time), and residents as far north as Doubtless Bay and as far south as Lake Manapōuri felt the tremors, although the impact was primarily concentrated in the central and southern regions of the North Island.

Alison Hetet told Stuff news that she strongly felt the earthquake in Foxton Beach, describing it as terrifying. "It went on for ages and was a decent shake, at least a minute," she stated. While she didn't notice any damage, photos had fallen from her dresser. "It seemed to come out of nowhere, the dogs were barking a lot before I felt it."

Carol Kehely stated that the earthquake came unexpectedly. "A huge rumble like a heavy truck first, then a jolt," she said. "However, nothing moved in the apartment apart from me and the cat," indicating a relatively mild impact despite the initial alarming sounds.

Following the earthquake, people actively posted on social media about their experiences. A man from Masterton said it was a "good shake." "I heard it coming, then a big jolt, the whole house shaking and creaking, then a smaller jolt, then it was over," he said. Another person commented, "Felt very rocky in Dannevirke." Earlier that evening, the North Island also experienced two "weaker" earthquakes. At 9:56 PM, a magnitude 2.6 earthquake occurred 15 kilometers east of Stratford at a depth of 10 kilometers, and at 10:38 PM, a magnitude 2.4 earthquake occurred in Masterton at a depth of 6 kilometers, suggesting a period of increased seismic activity in the region.
