Becky Webster, a pub landlady in the UK, recently encountered an unexpected "mishap." She had previously promised to give away a free pint of beer for every goal scored by her local Premier League team. As a result, the team won a resounding 7-0 victory, causing her significant financial losses.
Webster runs a pub called the Gedling Inn in Nottinghamshire, in the central region of England. Last Saturday, Nottingham Forest defeated Brighton by a stunning score, and she ended up giving away 300 pints of beer for free, worth £1,500 (approximately $3,000 USD). This unexpected outcome certainly put a strain on her business.
She revealed to the BBC that this ill-fated promotion has sparked international attention, receiving messages and media inquiries from Australia, the United States, and South America. Almost everyone is asking if the pub will be able to continue operating after suffering such a huge financial loss. The outpouring of support has been quite remarkable.
Webster stated, "It's been overwhelming, but it's great to get some positivity out of something that seemed like a loss." The pub only announced the promotion 45 minutes before the game started. Previously, Nottingham Forest had suffered a 0-5 defeat in their previous match, and few fans could have predicted the ensuing goal frenzy. The timing of the announcement added to the surprise.
Webster said she had originally expected Forest to score "two or three goals," and she was upstairs feeding her baby when the goals started pouring in. Although her partner suggested canceling the offer, she insisted on continuing. She momentarily forgot about the cost because "everyone was having so much fun." The atmosphere in the pub was electric.
Now, after calculating the financial damage to her business, Webster hopes that breweries can offer assistance. She even stated that she would welcome funding from Nottingham Forest's owner, Greek businessman Evangelos Marinakis. "But realistically, if he came to visit, we'd give him a free pint, he's done an amazing job," she said. His support would be greatly appreciated.
