Abstract: Israeli airstrike killed Hamas finance chief Ismail Bahum in Gaza's Nasser Hospital. IDF claims he was conducting terror acts. Tensions rise after truce failure.

According to the BBC, Hamas officials stated that an Israeli airstrike on a hospital in Gaza on Sunday evening resulted in the death of a senior Hamas leader and his aide. The victim was Ismail Bahum, Hamas's finance chief, and the incident occurred at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.

Bahum is one of the highest-ranking Hamas figures to be killed by Israel since it resumed military operations against Hamas last Tuesday, following a two-month ceasefire. Hamas stated that Bahum had been injured in a previous airstrike and was receiving treatment at Nasser Hospital.

However, Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani, a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), called this claim "completely false." He stated that Bahum was at the hospital to "carry out acts of terrorism" and had been there for weeks. The Hamas-run health ministry said on Monday morning that 730 people had been killed by Israel since then, including at least 61 in the past day.

Meanwhile, Israeli police reported that a terrorist attack occurred near Haifa on Monday, resulting in the death of a 75-year-old Israeli man and injuries to a 20-year-old soldier. Police stated that the attacker drove a car into a bus stop, then stabbed and shot at people before being shot dead by police.

The IDF stated that they conducted an "extensive intelligence gathering process" before launching the attack on Bahum, adding that "precision munitions" were used to reduce harm. The health ministry said that "many others," including medical staff, were injured in the airstrike. The attacked department has been evacuated after being mostly destroyed. BBC-verified video shows people trying to extinguish the flames after the attack.

Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of using hospitals as hiding places for weapons and command centers, but Hamas denies this. An official told the BBC that earlier on Sunday, another Hamas leader, Salah Bardawil, was killed in a separate Israeli airstrike in Khan Younis.

Israel resumed military operations, accusing Hamas of rejecting a new US-proposed extension of the truce. Hamas, in turn, accused Israel of abandoning the original agreement reached in January. The war was triggered by Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the abduction of 251 people as hostages.

Israel responded to the October 7 attack by launching a military offensive in Gaza to destroy Hamas. The Hamas-run health ministry says that the offensive has resulted in the deaths of over 50,000 people.
