HSBC has confirmed that its branch in St Sampson will permanently close later this year. In an email sent to customers, HSBC stated that the branch, located at The Bridge, will have its last day of business on September 24th.
The bank stated that after the branch closes, customers will be able to use services at the High Street branch in St Peter Port, and their account details, such as sort codes, will not change. The St Sampson branch will remain open while the St Martin branch undergoes a five-month refurbishment starting in February.
In an impact statement published on its website, HSBC stated that they "continually review" their network to ensure they have branches in the "right locations." The bank also published data used to make this decision, which showed that less than 1% of people only use branches for their banking, while 97% of payments are now made online.
Furthermore, HSBC revealed that four out of five people are registered for online banking, and that 20% of "vulnerable customers" are active users of digital banking. HSBC stated that they will call every vulnerable customer in order to find a "personalized" solution for them after the branch closure.
