An avalanche in the Piedmont region of northern Italy struck a group of five skiers, tragically resulting in the deaths of three. Rescue personnel have confirmed this information and are currently handling the aftermath.
Two other skiers survived the avalanche and have been airlifted to a hospital for treatment. Their injuries are currently being evaluated.
The avalanche occurred around noon local time on Sunday, on the eastern side of Punta Valgranda peak, located on the border between Italy and Switzerland. It is reported that the area was experiencing peak skiing activity at the time.
The skiers who perished were dragged hundreds of meters by the avalanche, sustaining fatal injuries. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of mountain sports.
Prior to the incident, an alert had been issued for areas above 2100 meters in the region, indicating a "considerable avalanche danger." Despite this warning, some skiers ventured into high-risk areas, ultimately leading to this tragic event.
