Abstract: A zebra at Colchester Zoo died after a rhino accidentally pierced its stomach during play. The animals cohabitated since 2017. The zoo is saddened by the rare incident.

A "heartbreaking" incident occurred at Colchester Zoo near London, England, where a zebra was killed by a rhinoceros. The zoo stated that the male zebra, Ziggy, died after his stomach was pierced by a white rhino.

According to the zoo, the animals had been living together in the "Kingdom of the Wild" area since 2017. The incident happened on Friday. The zoo explained, "The two rhinos, Astrid and her son Tayo, were playing with each other, which is normal behavior for the species. Unfortunately, on this occasion, Astrid attempted to move Ziggy out of the way, accidentally piercing his stomach, which resulted in him dying from his injuries a few minutes later."

The zoo stated that their animal care team will continue to closely monitor the animals' behavior. "Incidents of this nature are extremely rare, and we are deeply saddened by the loss of Ziggy, who was a much-loved animal and will be greatly missed," the zoo added. A visitor who was present at the time said on Facebook that they saw "the rhino and zebra chasing" before being asked to leave.

The zoo stated that the exhibit is "one of the few areas where different animals can be seen interacting as they would in the wild." The area is also home to reticulated giraffes, ostriches, crowned cranes, and greater kudu, among other animals.
