Music enthusiasts in Australia have had an exciting day, as triple j radio has unveiled the 2024 Hottest 100 list, as voted by the public. This list reveal has garnered widespread attention, with music fans eagerly checking to see if their favorite songs made the cut.
American singer-songwriter Chappell Roan has ultimately topped the list with her powerful song, "Good Luck, Babe!". This makes her one of the few artists to debut at number one with only one song on the list. "Good Luck, Babe!", released as a standalone single in April 2024, introduced Chappell Roan's baroque pop music to listeners in Australia and around the globe.
Upon its release, we noted the song's style as a blend of Lady Gaga and Kate Bush, with a Shakespearean sense of drama. However, we did not anticipate the immense impact the song would have on the 26-year-old artist. In an email to fans, Chappell stated that the song would be the "first song of my next chapter," marking her official departure from the era of her 2023 debut album, "Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess."
Previously, only The Wiggles, with their cover of Tame Impala's "Elephant" in 2021, and Denis Leary, with his comedy song "Asshole" in the inaugural Hottest 100 in 1993, have achieved such a feat. Additionally, Dom Dolla's song "girl$" came in at number seven, Lola Young's viral hit "Messy" climbed to number four, and Charli XCX's remix collaboration with Billie Eilish, "Guess," secured the sixth position. Both Billie and Charli broke records on this year's list, with eight entries each (including the "Guess" remix), setting a new record for the most songs by an artist on a single list.
Billie Eilish has also become the most successful artist in the history of the Hottest 100. Her eight songs on the 2024 list bring her total to 25 entries, surpassing the previous record held by Hilltop Hoods. Furthermore, Fred again.. and Baby Keem's collaboration, "leavemealone," landed at number ten, G Flip's cover of Taylor Swift's "Cruel Summer" came in at number nine, and Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us" took the eighth spot.
Gracie Abrams' "That's So True" debuted in the top five, boosted by its viral popularity on TikTok. Lola Young's "Messy" also gained attention for the sheer number of "F"-word expletives in its lyrics. Billie Eilish's "BIRDS OF A FEATHER" made another top ten appearance, landing at number three. Royel Otis' cover of "Murder On The Dancefloor" garnered over 19 million views across triple j's YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok platforms, ultimately securing the second position.
In an interview with triple j, Chappell Roan stated that "Good Luck, Babe!" is a "blueprint" for her future music. She said, "'Good Luck, Babe!' is a powerful synth-pop song, and I've always been drawn to that style." She also mentioned that the song's success has inspired her to continue making the music she loves.
Triple j will continue to unveil the Hottest 200 list on Monday, January 27th, featuring songs that didn't make the top 100 but are still beloved. Additionally, Rage will broadcast a celebration of the 2024 Hottest 100 on January 31st (technically Saturday morning) at 1 AM, showcasing music videos from the artists on this year's list.
