A passenger was arrested at Sydney Airport for allegedly assaulting another person on a plane due to luggage falling from an overhead bin. The incident reportedly occurred yesterday on a flight arriving from New Zealand while passengers were disembarking.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) stated that the 25-year-old Thai man became aggressive and punched another passenger in the face after luggage fell from an overhead compartment and hit him on the head. The man has been charged with one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The maximum penalty for this offense is five years imprisonment. Acting Superintendent Damian Furlong of the Australian Federal Police stated that police have “zero tolerance for violent or abusive behavior.”
Superintendent Furlong said, “Aggressive behavior in confined spaces can be very frightening for everyone.” He further added, “The Australian Federal Police works closely with the aviation industry and we will intervene if anyone’s behavior impacts the well-being of other passengers.”
The Australian Federal Police has not disclosed the specific airline the passenger was traveling on.
