James Lee Williams, a famous British drag queen known by the stage name The Vivienne, who rose to fame on "RuPaul's Drag Race UK," passed away over the weekend at the age of 32.
Williams' publicist, Simon Jones, released a statement on social media platform X on Sunday, saying, "It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved James Lee Williams, The Vivienne, over this past weekend. James was a much loved and wonderfully kind person who was an inspiration to many."
Born in Wales, The Vivienne was appointed as the UK ambassador for "RuPaul's Drag Race" in 2015 and later won the show's UK edition in 2019. She also participated in "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars" Season 7 and placed third in the 2023 UK series of "Dancing on Ice."
The official "RuPaul's Drag Race" X account posted on Sunday, stating, "We are heartbroken at the passing of The Vivienne. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy will continue to shine as a beacon of creativity and authenticity—she embodied what it means to be a true champion." Michelle Visage, a judge on the show, also praised her as "a beacon to so many." The Vivienne's name was inspired by her love for fashion designer Vivienne Westwood.
Beyond "RuPaul's Drag Race," The Vivienne also appeared in musicals and television series, including the touring production of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and the film "Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie." Jones stated that further details regarding Williams' passing will not be released. "We would ask that you please allow James' family time and privacy to process and grieve."
