Abstract: Hunter Valley: Driver, 18, lost control during burnout, injuring 6 (incl. kids) at illegal street gathering. Driver allegedly assaulted. Police investigate.

According to reports, an 18-year-old driver in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales lost control of his vehicle while performing a burnout, injuring six people, including two children. The driver was then allegedly severely assaulted. Police are currently investigating the incident, seeking to understand the full chain of events.

Police received a call at approximately 12:05 am reporting an accident on Bromage Road in Abermain, about 8 kilometers from Cessnock. Reports indicated that a car performing a burnout struck a parked vehicle, which then hit several pedestrians. The incident occurred at an illegal street gathering, highlighting the dangers of such events.

The accident resulted in internal injuries to an 8-year-old girl and serious injuries to a 31-year-old woman. A blue Subaru Legacy AWD sedan traveling east struck two parked vehicles, a white LDV and a champagne-colored Mazda 6. The AWD then crashed into a group of people, further compounding the damage and injuries. The injured included two children and four adults who were watching the illegal street racing activity.

New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Dave Wardell stated that the driver was allegedly attacked by the crowd after the crash. He said, "It is very concerning that eight and ten-year-old children are present at street racing events late at night." He added that this would be part of the investigation, emphasizing the need to address the broader issues surrounding these gatherings. Currently, the 8-year-old girl remains in the hospital receiving treatment, while the 10-year-old child was treated for minor injuries. Two women, aged 25 and 31, are also still in the hospital, with the 31-year-old woman suffering from head injuries. Two men, aged 24 and 25, were also taken to the hospital, with the younger man suffering a broken leg and the older man receiving treatment for a foot injury.

Seven people, including the driver, were treated at the scene by paramedics. It is believed that one of the patients was the 8-year-old child, who was airlifted to the hospital. Police have established a crime scene, and the crash investigation unit is investigating the incident, aiming to determine the exact cause and contributing factors. Wardell stated that the area is frequently targeted by dangerous drivers and street racing gatherings. Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant video footage to contact the police or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
