Police have charged a third teenager in connection with a home invasion and sexual assault in Far North Queensland. Concurrently, body-worn camera footage from the arrest of another teenager involved in the case has also been released to the public, highlighting the swift police response.
Detective Inspector Kevin Goan stated that the three teenagers allegedly broke into a residence in Manunda, Cairns, at approximately 3:30 a.m. last Friday. A couple in their thirties were reportedly asleep inside the house at the time. "One of the male offenders restrained the male occupant of the dwelling, while the other two offenders threatened the female occupant with a knife and took her outside where she was sexually assaulted," Inspector Goan said yesterday, detailing the harrowing ordeal.
Following the incident, police arrested two teenagers, aged 15 and 16, on the same day and continued their pursuit of the third suspect. The 15-year-old was located and taken into custody at a residence in Manunda before 6:00 p.m. yesterday. He has been charged with 13 offenses, including five counts of rape, two counts of armed robbery, and deprivation of liberty, among other charges. He is scheduled to appear in the Innisfail Children's Court today.
The other two teenagers were charged yesterday with 11 offenses each, including five counts of rape, two counts each of armed robbery and deprivation of liberty, and one count each of burglary and entering a dwelling with intent whilst armed. Alongside the announcement of the new charges, body-worn camera footage was released showing the dramatic arrest of one of the teenagers last Friday. The video depicts officers tackling the teenager to the ground and taking him into custody, underscoring the seriousness with which authorities are treating the case.
