Abstract: UK burglar Paul Howell got 3+ years in prison after triggering a "Home Alone"-style water trap during an attempted break-in. He pleaded guilty to burglary and theft.

A repeat burglar in the UK was brought to justice and sentenced to more than three years in prison after triggering a trap reminiscent of the movie "Home Alone." Paul Howell attempted to break into a home in Northumberland at 3 a.m. last November and fell victim to a trap set by the homeowner.

Due to multiple attempted burglaries in the area, the residents set up a device in their home: a rope connecting the house to a bucket filled with water. When Howell triggered the trap, he immediately fled the scene. The residents discovered the overturned bucket, reviewed the surveillance footage, and reported the incident to the police a few days later.

Shortly after, 56-year-old Howell was arrested and charged with attempted burglary. Police also charged Howell the following week in connection with another burglary that occurred at a different residence. In that burglary, Howell forced entry into the house and stole a range of items, including jewelry and a bicycle.

Howell pleaded guilty to all charges at Newcastle Criminal Court last December and was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison. Detective Constable Jon Mullen of the Northumberland Police stated that burglary is an invasive crime that makes people feel unsafe in their own homes.

Constable Mullen added, "Howell is a repeat offender, and he will face a lengthy period behind bars following his sentencing."
