Australian player Grace Harris has become the first Australian to take a hat-trick in the Women's Premier League (WPL) in India. The batting all-rounder stated that she had foreseen this achievement.
Harris, who plays for the UP Warriorz, had a mediocre start to the WPL. However, her fortunes changed on Saturday when she took three crucial wickets for the Delhi Capitals with consecutive balls, helping her team win by 33 runs in Bengaluru.
After the match, Harris said, "I think I manifested it. When asked what my plans were in the bowlers' meeting, I joked that I would do this and that, and then get a hat-trick." She added, "We have these informal meetings, but they all laughed when I actually got the hat-trick. Now I have some runs to chase because I am a batting all-rounder, but recently my bowling has been better than my batting."
Harris came on to bowl in her third over, which was also the 20th and final over of the Delhi Capitals' innings, when the game was virtually over. She finished with figures of 4-15, having earlier dismissed fellow Australian Annabel Sutherland for five. Sutherland was a key wicket as Meg Lanning's Capitals never got to grips with the chase of the UP Warriorz's 9-177, eventually falling short on 144.
Harris is only the third player in WPL history to take a hat-trick, following Issy Wong in the inaugural 2023 competition and Deepti Sharma last year. With Harris's first ball, Niki Prasad was caught by Chamari Athapaththu at deep mid-off for 18. Harris couldn't help but laugh as Arundhati Reddy slapped her next delivery – a full toss – straight to cover. Minnu Mani then chipped the next ball straight back to Harris, who took the catch after a juggle.
