Ajla Tomljanovic's impressive run in Texas came to an end as she was defeated by American top seed Jessica Pegula in the semifinals of the WTA tournament in Austin.
The Australian player fought back after losing the first set, but ultimately fell short with a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 after nearly two hours of intense battle. Tomljanovic, ranked No. 111 in the world, was considered an underdog before the match against Pegula, who is ranked fourth in the world.
In the first set, the Australian player's serve was inconsistent, with seven double faults. However, Tomljanovic showed resilience and fought back in the second set, pushing the match to a decisive third set.
The three-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist was unable to complete the comeback, and Pegula advanced to her second final of the year with a strong performance. "My serve was a little bit up and down today... It was hot today, the ball was flying, but once I started serving a little bit more consistent and smarter, that was key," Pegula said. "Every final is new... This is my first time playing here and being in the States, I love doing well, I always want to prove that I'm one of the best American players and one of the best players in the world, so to be able to do it at home is always special."
Tomljanovic, the former world No. 32, will return to the world's top 100 next week after an excellent week of play.
