Abstract: Crown Princess tilted due to strong winds near Milford Sound, injuring 16. A 14-degree tilt lasted 40 seconds. The ship continued its voyage.

A cruise ship suddenly tilted during its voyage, resulting in 16 injuries. Passenger Martin Wise stated that he had never experienced anything similar. The incident occurred when the Crown Princess cruise ship encountered strong winds near Milford Sound.

Wise was dining in the restaurant on the sixth floor at the time. He recalled, "I felt the ship start to lean, and then the tilt became larger and faster. Looking out the restaurant window, the sea appeared very high." Subsequently, cups, glasses, and plates were "flying around" the room, accompanied by crashing sounds, and there was a loud noise coming from the kitchen.

Wise estimated that the entire event lasted about 40 seconds. The captain informed passengers that the cruise ship had encountered winds of 75 knots, which caused a brief increase in speed and a 14-degree tilt in the ship. Wise stated that the scare factor of this experience was between 8.5 and 10 out of 10. "This is our seventh time on a Princess cruise, and nothing like this has ever happened before."

According to the industry website Cruise Passenger, the cruise ship was on a 14-day round trip from Sydney to New Zealand when severe weather conditions caused the ship to rock and tilt while sailing in the Fiordland area. It was reported that 13 passengers and 3 crew members sustained minor injuries. The cruise ship can accommodate 3,090 passengers, and the hull did not sustain any structural damage and continued its voyage as planned.

Princess Cruises said in a statement to the Cruise Hive website: “On February 25, while Crown Princess was sailing in the New Zealand Fiordland region, the ship encountered strong winds during a course change, causing the ship to briefly tilt beyond its normal range before stabilizing. Our crew acted quickly to correct the situation, and the safety of the ship was never compromised at any time. In addition, a small amount of water from the Lido Deck swimming pool briefly entered the Horizons Court, but the area was quickly cleaned and reopened. The ship sustained no structural damage.”
