Newborn Noah weighed only 2.9 kilograms and arrived in the world nearly two weeks ahead of his due date, eager to make his entrance. His mother, Alisha West, stated, "I still can't believe he's here, it all happened so fast, and I'm so grateful." This delivery was full of drama; was it a coincidence or a twist of fate that led to this extraordinary event?
Alisha recalled that on February 25th, she was having lunch at her mother's home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, when she suddenly started having contractions, abruptly interrupting their meal. Alisha's mother, Elisa Danielle West, said, "We jumped in the car, and halfway down the street, she started screaming, 'Mom, my water broke!'" Realizing they might not make it to Cooper Hospital in Camden in time, Elisa quickly pulled the car into a parking lot at the corner of Route 70 and Kingston Drive.
"I jumped out of the car. The 911 dispatcher asked, 'What do you see?' I said, 'Yes, I can see the head.' Within seconds, the top of the baby's head was visible, and a few seconds later, I said, 'Give it a little push,' and he came out, and I caught him," Elisa said. "I was practically the MVP, but I'm no hero," she said with a laugh. Alisha also stated, "You don't think you can handle something like that, but when you're in that situation and have to do it, you'd be surprised at what you're capable of."
They also expressed their appreciation for the prompt response from the medical staff from Virtua Health and Cherry Hill. Virtua Health medic Ryan Kelly stated, "Most medics deliver a baby once or twice in their career, usually in unusual locations and circumstances. In this case, the baby was born minutes before we arrived on the scene and was doing well. I commend Danielle for her quick thinking and calm demeanor. It's an extraordinary story with a happy ending." Elisa said emotionally, "It almost brings tears to my eyes because they were so good to us."
This day held immense significance for the West family. On that very morning, Danielle learned that her mother, Elisa Marie Minshall, had passed away after battling leukemia. "I was very sad about my mother's passing, but I think this baby was sent by God to give us a distraction, and he certainly distracted us all day. He's adorable," Elisa said. Alisha chose the name Noah because it means comfort. "When he was born, he was very calm, and he really brought the comfort and calmness that our family needed, and we can heal from that," Alisha said. Now, the family is both grappling with the grief of losing a loved one and grateful for the arrival of new life, mourning their loss while embracing a beautiful blessing.
"My mother loved holding babies, but unfortunately, she won't be able to hold this one, but she's watching over us from heaven," Elisa said. "She would be very happy, and I know she's looking down on me now and excited for me," Alisha said. Alisha and Noah are expected to return home on Saturday. The family is still planning the funeral, which will be held on March 8th, which was originally Noah's due date.
