Nick Kyrgios's comeback trail has suffered another significant blow. The Australian player was forced to retire due to injury in the first round of the Indian Wells ATP tournament, thwarting his efforts to return to the court once again. This setback raises questions about his future participation in upcoming tournaments.
The controversial Canberra native was trailing Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp 7-6 (9/7), 3-0 in the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday night. He was then forced to retire due to a right wrist injury. Kyrgios had held a set point in the first-set tiebreaker, showcasing his initial competitive spirit before the injury worsened.
Kyrgios consulted with a physiotherapist during the match and was visibly dejected afterward, realizing his night was over. The 29-year-old wiped away tears before walking to van de Zandschulp to announce his retirement. Kyrgios stated, "I didn't have much confidence in being able to play today. I had to stop training two days ago because of wrist pain, but I felt like I could come out and try."
Kyrgios's withdrawal follows his first-round exit at the Australian Open in January of this year. After that match, he suggested it could be his last singles match at Melbourne Park. Had Kyrgios won this match, he would have faced legend Novak Djokovic in the second round, a highly anticipated matchup now unrealized.
Notably, this was Kyrgios's first major tournament appearance since reaching the quarter-finals of the 2022 US Open. He has since undergone wrist and knee surgery, and this latest injury undoubtedly casts a shadow over his comeback plans, potentially delaying his return to top form even further.
