According to U.S. authorities, an armed man, believed to have traveled from Indiana, was shot after an altercation with Secret Service agents near the White House.
The Secret Service said in a statement that the shooting occurred around midnight on Sunday (3 p.m. Australian Eastern Daylight Time), about one block from the White House, and no one else was injured. U.S. President Donald Trump was in Florida at the time.
The Secret Service received information from local police regarding a suspected "suicidal individual" traveling from Indiana. The Secret Service subsequently located the man's vehicle and an individual matching the description.
“As officers approached, the man brandished a weapon, and an armed confrontation ensued, during which our personnel fired their weapons,” the Secret Service said in a statement.
The man has been transported to a hospital. The Secret Service stated that his condition is "unknown." Because the shooting involved law enforcement personnel, the Metropolitan Police Department will investigate the incident. Messages left with the police department on Sunday have not been immediately returned.
