Abstract: Suva restaurants found with expired food & pests in surprise inspections by the Ministry of Health. Violations of the 2003 Food Safety Act noted.

Several restaurants in popular dining areas of Suva have been found to have expired food and pest problems. The Ministry of Health stated that its environmental health officers conducted surprise inspections in two popular suburban areas after a week-long training program.

The Ministry of Health stated, "Inspectors found expired food in some restaurants and the presence of pests such as cockroaches." This indicates negligence in food safety management in some restaurants, requiring immediate improvement measures.

The inspection was based on the 2003 Food Safety Act, which aims to protect public health and food safety, regulate the preparation, sale, and use of food, assist consumers in making informed food choices, and promote fair food trade practices. The Food Safety Act is an important legal basis for food safety supervision.

Inspectors also checked food storage, preparation and hygiene conditions, dining area hygiene, adequate water supply and sanitation facilities, the provision of first aid kits, and food business licenses. These inspection items cover all aspects of food safety management, ensuring that catering establishments meet relevant standards.
