A fatal truck accident at a recycling center in western Sydney has triggered a statewide workplace safety alert in New South Wales. An investigation is currently underway into the incident at the Greenacre recycling center, which resulted in the death of a man in his 50s and occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. yesterday.
Just hours prior, a serious workplace injury also occurred at a car repair shop in Auburn, where a worker in his 40s suffered severe injuries after being crushed between two vehicles. SafeWork NSW has issued a prohibition notice to the workplace involved, mandating the enforcement of safer vehicle operation procedures.
Both incidents occurred during targeted compliance operations across the state aimed at reducing workplace injuries. Since last month, nearly 250 notices have been issued, including 12 visits to a street in Prestons, which resulted in 42 improvement notices and 7 prohibition notices being issued over three days.
SafeWork NSW Head Trent Curtin stated, "It is devastating to see these two serious incidents occur in such a short period of time, and I extend my condolences to their families, friends, and colleagues."
"Those working around mobile plant, fixed machinery, and vehicles need to stop and check their existing safety systems to prevent these types of incidents from happening again."
