Emma Raducanu advanced to the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career by defeating 17th seed Amanda Anisimova in straight sets at the Miami Open. The British player displayed excellent form from the start of the match, easily winning the first set in just 24 minutes, eventually securing a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
This marks Raducanu's first time winning four consecutive WTA Tour main draw matches since her victory at the 2021 US Open. She dominated this match, sweeping aside her opponent Anisimova. Notably, prior to this tournament, Raducanu had lost five out of six matches since the Australian Open and ended her partnership with coach Vladimir Platenik just two weeks prior.
"Since Indian Wells, I've made significant progress in the past week. At that time, I didn't have a very good view of my tennis level and everything," the 22-year-old said in an interview with Sky Sports. "This week, I have some excellent people around me who I trust and get along well with off the court. This is very important."
Raducanu broke serve in the first game of the match and quickly took the first set without dropping a point in her own service games. Her return game was impressive, constantly putting pressure on Anisimova's serve. As the first set progressed, the American player became increasingly frustrated and appeared to be troubled by a right wrist injury. After taking a medical timeout between sets, her condition improved somewhat, but it was still not enough to prevent Raducanu from breaking serve in the second set to take a 3-1 lead.
Anisimova broke back immediately, but Raducanu once again showed the resilience she has displayed this week, breaking serve again and confidently holding her subsequent service game to win the match. "I just knew I had to try to get every ball back and make it as physical as possible because I have confidence in that," the British No. 2 added. "I was happy with the way I was moving and how I was extending the rallies from the first game, first point and kind of getting into my opponent's head." Raducanu will face world No. 4 Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals, who defeated Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk 6-2, 6-3.
