The Auki Police Station in Malaita Province recently launched a raid in Auki Town, cracking down on gambling in public places and taking action against individuals suspected of providing premises for illegal gambling activities. A total of seven men and three women were arrested and charged, signaling a strong stance against such unlawful conduct.
Superintendent Tex Tafoa, the Provincial Police Commander (PPC) for Malaita Province, stated that the provincial government and communities around Auki are concerned about the increasing gambling, alcohol sales, and illegal drug use in public places. These activities have caused significant damage to families and triggered public disturbances, subsequently raising concerns about public health and safety, necessitating immediate and sustained police intervention.
Superintendent Tafoa confirmed that police raided a known gambling den and found people gambling inside a makeshift building. He stated, "Police did not hesitate to arrest 10 people, aged between 21 and 31 years, who are suspected of participating in illegal gambling." The owner of the premises involved was also detained for further questioning and legal proceedings, highlighting the comprehensive approach to tackling the issue.
Superintendent Tafoa emphasized that gambling in public places is an offense under the Solomon Islands' Gaming and Lotteries Act. The police will resolutely crack down on such illegal activities, committed to maintaining law and order in Auki Town and ensuring that public places are safe for all residents, thereby promoting a more secure environment for everyone.
The arrested suspects will face charges under Section 4 of the Gaming and Lotteries Act for gambling in public places. In addition, the premises owner will face charges under Section 3(4)(a) for organizing or managing illegal gambling, and under Section 3(4)(1) for allowing the premises to be used for illegal gambling. Superintendent Tafoa urged the public not to participate in or assist illegal gambling activities and to respect the law. Auki police will continue their efforts to curb illegal gambling and related activities, and called on the residents of Auki Town to actively participate in a joint effort to make Auki a safe town, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in maintaining law and order.
