Abstract: Robert Bohn, VPDP founder, seeks Vanuatu PM despite his party's weak election showing. He cites economic crisis, offers solutions & decades of work. Some question a naturalized citizen's bid.

Robert Bohn, the elected member for the Epi constituency, has written to all elected members expressing his desire to contest for the position of Prime Minister of Vanuatu. Bohn, the founder of the Vanuatu Progressive Development Party (VPDP), has humbly requested that members consider his candidacy, despite unofficial results showing that only one candidate from his party was elected in the recent snap election.

In his letter, Bohn stated, "I humbly request that you consider my candidacy for Prime Minister, not because of who I am, but because of what I believe we can achieve together. As elected leaders, our task is clear – we must address the critical issues facing our nation amidst a deep economic crisis." He emphasized that Vanuatu is at a historic crossroads, with three parliamentary dissolutions in less than a decade, which has not only hindered progress but also left citizens frustrated and disillusioned.

Bohn pointed out that government revenue is declining, while spending and public debt are rising, and resources are stretched thin. The capital city, Port Vila, has suffered damage from natural disasters, requiring significant effort and funds for reconstruction. More concerning, he added, is the eroding trust among the people in their leaders and institutions. He believes that now is the time for change and that they should not repeat the same mistakes while expecting different results. He stressed the need for a government that prioritizes practical, workable solutions, such as fixing roads, building infrastructure, and ensuring access to basic necessities like clean water, healthcare, and education.

Bohn stated that as a naturalized citizen of Vanuatu, he has dedicated over 30 years of his life to the country. He has worked with communities, partnered with donor organizations, and implemented numerous projects, including health clinics and water and sanitation facilities. He believes he is ready to bring the same dedication, network, and vision to serve the entire nation of Vanuatu. He acknowledges that his proposal may seem unconventional, but he emphasizes that leadership is not about numbers, but about trust, competence, and the ability to unite. He pledged that if entrusted with the premiership, he would form a government that reflects the diversity and unity of the nation, leading Vanuatu towards stability and prosperity.

Bohn quoted Albert Einstein, saying, "In the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity." He argues that these challenges are not insurmountable but a call to action, requiring courageous leadership and bold ideas. The Vanuatu Daily Post has received confirmation from the President of the Leaders Party of Vanuatu (LPV), Jotham Napat, that he has received and read the letter. However, Napat questioned, "Do we not have indigenous elected members who are capable of governing this country?" Bohn’s request has already sparked divisions among elected members, who are questioning why a naturalized citizen would seek the highest office in the country—the premiership. Meanwhile, winning political parties are continuing to lobby to form the new government for the 14th legislature.
