The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) has released a weather update, indicating the presence of a low-pressure system located northwest of the northern islands. This system is anticipated to bring strong northwesterly, northerly, and northeasterly winds of 20 to 33 knots (37 to 61 km/h) to parts of the northern and central islands yesterday and today.
These weather conditions could lead to the breaking of dry branches and the falling of weaker-stemmed crops such as bananas. Overcast skies are expected nationwide, along with showers and rain. In particular, the northern islands (including TORBA, SANMA, and PENAMA) and parts of the central islands (such as MALAMPA and SHEFA) are likely to experience heavy rainfall and possible thunderstorms.
VMGD has issued several warnings, urging the public to take necessary precautions. Parts of the northern and central islands remain under an isolated heavy rainfall warning, and authorities advise residents in areas susceptible to flooding and landslides to remain vigilant. Furthermore, a marine warning has been issued for all coastal waters of Vanuatu, alerting mariners to potentially hazardous sea conditions.
Concurrently, a strong wind warning has been issued for parts of the land areas of the northern and central islands, highlighting the risks posed by the strong winds. The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has also released an advisory, urging residents to prepare for a potential escalation of the weather system.
People are advised to prepare an emergency kit containing essentials such as important documents, battery-powered flashlights, drinking water, and food, in case of a cyclone. Additionally, households should ensure they have sufficient food and clean water and take necessary measures to reinforce their homes against strong winds. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and urge the public to stay informed through official weather reports and emergency announcements.
