Abstract: Fiji's minister urges media to objectively amplify women's voices, highlighting their power to shape perceptions & advance gender equality.

The media plays a crucial role in shaping public perception and transforming women's discourse across various fields. They possess the power to influence societal views on women and advance the cause of gender equality.

At a breakfast hosted by The Fiji Times Pte Limited to celebrate International Women's Day, Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare, Sashi Kiran, emphasized the growing importance of the media in amplifying women's voices and promoting progress towards gender equality. She noted that the media is a key force in empowering women and promoting social justice.

Reflecting on this year's theme of "Accelerate Action," Minister Kiran urged the people of Fiji to pause and acknowledge and respect the struggles and achievements of their predecessors, including women from indigenous Fijian, Melanesian, and Chinese communities. She emphasized the importance of respecting history and recognizing the contributions of women.

Minister Kiran stated, "We have made great strides, but there is still a long way to go in many areas." She also pointed out that complaints and discussions within the community are often influenced by the content reported by the media, highlighting that the media's narrative is shaping the direction of the nation's narrative.

Therefore, the media should assume greater social responsibility, reporting on women's issues from an objective and impartial perspective, contributing to the construction of a more equal and inclusive society. Through proactive advocacy and guidance, the media can effectively change public perception and promote the realization of gender equality goals.
