A traffic accident occurred near the University of Auckland, where a car veered onto the sidewalk, injuring five people, one of whom was seriously injured. The incident happened just after noon (10 a.m. AEST), and police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle was traveling along Symonds Street when the driver hit the curb, striking two people and forcing students to jump out of the way. Police indicated that drugs or alcohol may be a factor in the accident and are currently investigating the cause.
According to police statements, one person is in critical condition and has been taken to the hospital, while four others sustained minor to moderate injuries. Additionally, one person with minor injuries was treated at the scene. Students Luka and Mateen witnessed the accident and stated that the driver lost control of the vehicle while traveling on Symonds Street outside the University of Auckland.
Mateen described, "[The driver] then hit the curb, went off the road, and hit a tree." Luka added that approximately 15 students had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit. Another witness, Stephen Dimapilis, told RNZ that he saw the car "wobbling" before it mounted the sidewalk. He stated that the vehicle appeared to be traveling faster than the 40 km/h speed limit for that section of road.
