Abstract: Malaita's Maru Market rebuild starts next year by Alrico, funded by Australia. New market with 100+ stalls, storage, & accessible facilities to boost local economy.

The Maru Market reconstruction project in Malaita Province is scheduled to commence in the new year, with local company Alrico Constructions awarded the early works contract. This project will significantly boost the economy of northern Malaita, with the new market providing stalls for 100 to 150 vendors, along with storage space, separate male and female toilets and shower facilities, and accessible entrances, toilets, showers, and market stalls for wheelchair users.

Alrico received the contract at a formal signing ceremony with the Malaita Provincial Government and the Australian High Commission, demonstrating Australia's ongoing commitment to supporting more Solomon Islands companies to work under the Solomon Islands-Australia Partnership framework. Malaita Provincial Minister of Finance, Lemuel Kekevianga, thanked Australia for its support of Malaita’s community development priorities, stating that the new market will drive economic growth, reduce rural poverty, and provide a vital place for farmers and small-scale industries to sell crops, clothing, and fish.

Minister Kekevianga noted, “Ninety percent of vendors in our markets are women, so this market will have a major impact on their ability to generate income for their families.” Acting Australian High Commissioner Andrew Schloeffel said he was proud of the record of Australia's provincial market rebuilding program, which to date has been delivered one hundred percent by Solomon Islands companies, creating jobs for local communities and enhancing local expertise in delivering high-quality infrastructure.

Mr. Schloeffel emphasized, "Australia is not only the largest infrastructure partner of Solomon Islands, but we are committed to investing in local businesses and Solomon Islands workers to build skills and confidence." Early works are expected to begin in February next year, including the construction of a temporary market for vendors. The existing market will be demolished to make way for the construction of the main body of the new market in the second half of 2025.

Alrico has pledged to work closely with the community during construction and demolition, and to use local labor wherever possible. This move aims to ensure the smooth progress of the project and bring tangible benefits to local residents.
