Berry Melteue, a member of the Rural Development Party (RDP), has been elected as the new President of the Malampa Provincial Government Council (MPGC). This election followed the resignation of the previous President, Warren Steven, who stepped down to contest a snap election but was unsuccessful in his bid.
During the election process, two candidates were nominated: Councilor Melteue from the Rural Development Party, and Councilor Casimir Tevanu from the Reunification Movement for Change (RMC). Germain Ludvaune, the Secretary General of the Malampa Provincial Government Council, confirmed these details when announcing the election results.
Secretary General Ludvaune stated that there are 21 councilors in Malampa Province, with one seat currently vacant. The election saw 18 councilors in attendance, with two absent, meeting the required quorum for the election. The results showed that Councilor Melteue of the Rural Development Party received 9 votes, while Councilor Tevanu received 8 votes, with 1 invalid vote. Ultimately, Melteue was elected as the new President of the Malampa Provincial Government Council.
Secretary General Ludvaune further clarified that the newly elected President will serve a short term until the end of March or early April, which is when the current council's term expires. Following this, the Malampa Provincial Government Council will hold elections to select the next 20 councilors. This means Melteue's term will be approximately two months long.
