Abstract: Oral & mental health are linked; neglect causes stress. Fiji pledges improved dental access, especially for kids & remote areas, prioritizing prevention.

Dr. Luisa Sikamatana, Chief Medical Advisor at the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, points out the increasingly close connection between oral health and mental health. Failure to properly manage both can lead to stress, anxiety, and even depression.

Speaking at the World Oral Health Day celebrations held in Nadi yesterday, Dr. Sikamatana stated that this highlights the importance of adopting a holistic healthcare approach. "Oral health plays a crucial role in promoting positive interactions, which are essential for mental and social well-being."

"Today, as we launch World Oral Health Day, we pledge to strengthen our oral health programs," said Dr. Sikamatana. "This includes improving access to dental services, especially for our children and residents in remote areas."

Dr. Sikamatana stated that the focus will be on preventative care, promoting good oral hygiene habits and healthy diets, as well as community education programs. She commended the Ministry of Health and all those involved for their contributions to improving oral health in Fiji.

"We must pay particular attention to the oral health of our school children. Implementing multidisciplinary strategies to reduce tooth decay is a top priority."
